The government has decided to deploy the army in six districts, including Dhaka, to keep the law and order situation normal across the country and prevent possible sabotage.
The home ministry issued a notification in this regard under ‘In Aid to Civil Power’ on Monday.
According to the notification, the army will be in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur, Gopalganj, Faridpur and Chittagong districts from June 22 to June 30. The main objective of the deployment is to ensure public safety and protect the public.
The home ministry said the decision was taken in the wake of fears that the Awami League could try to create sabotage or chaos through illegal processions, showdowns and other programmes. According to the intelligence agency, the party may try to hold programs in secret in different places, focusing on the founding anniversary of the party.
The government fears that these programmes could lead to deterioration of the law and order situation and the risk of loss of lives. The army is being deployed alongside local administration and law enforcement agencies to deal with this situation.
Earlier, the police headquarters also issued special alerts across the country. Field-level units were directed to take necessary steps to prevent possible processions, showdowns or sabotage activities.
As part of the security measures, intelligence surveillance has been stepped up and additional security is being tightened in important installations and public places.
