UK Prime Minister Kier Starmer has announced his resignation from the post of prime minister. He made the decision while talking to reporters outside London’s 10 Downing Street on Monday after days of political pressure and criticism inside the Labour Party.
“I will resign,” Starmer said. However, he made it clear that he would serve as prime minister until a new leader is elected.
He said the new Labour Party leader would be elected before the re-assemint of parliament in September and the transfer of power to him. He said he had already discussed the matter with King Charles III.
Proming to complete the process of transfer of power in an orderly and democratic manner, Starmer said he would play a responsible role till the last day to maintain the political stability of the country.
Kier Starmer gave the Labour Party a historic victory in the 2024 general election. Under his leadership, the party regained power from the Conservative Party after fourteen years. However, after coming to power, his popularity gradually decreased due to a series of policy decisions, economic issues and political debates.
After the big victory of political rival Andy Bernham in a crucial by-election in northwest England, questions at the party level became more intense. Since then, pressure has been mounting on his resignation.
Political analysts believe he has decided to resign in order to maintain party unity and give him a chance to change leadership.
