Road transport and bridges minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam has said that the government is planning to relocate Gabtali and Sayedabad bus terminals to reduce traffic congestion in the capital and bring discipline in inter-district bus transport.
He said the Gabtali bus terminal will be moved to Hemayetpur and Sayedabad bus terminal in Kanchpur within the next two years.
The minister said this while exchanging views with members of Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at the Secretariat on Thursday.
The road minister said the environment and infrastructure of the main bus terminals in the capital are not suitable for modern passenger services. Due to this, some reforms have been taken in the short term, but in the long term, the terminals are planned to be relocated to the edge of the city.
He said that in the next four to six months, some visible changes will be made in the environment and management of the existing terminals. However, it may take about two years for the complete relocation process to complete.
The minister also said that at present, some private bus companies are making their own passenger fluctuations in different parts of the capital, especially in different areas of the capital, especially in different areas of Kalabagan. Such unregulated activities will be stopped in the future and the bus service will be ensured from the designated terminal.
According to him, modern terminal infrastructure is required for the operation of high-quality and air-conditioned (AC) buses. The new terminals have plans to ensure a passenger-friendly environment, improved sanitation system and orderly management structure.
“The government is working to restore order in bus management. It will take some time for the benefits to be visible, but the capital’s public transport system will have a positive change.”
