Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has been arrested in Dubai in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). A responsible source at the police headquarters confirmed that Dubai Police arrested her based on an Interpol red notice.
A senior official of the police headquarters confirmed the matter to the media on Sunday afternoon. Earlier, on February 10, 2025, the court ordered the issuance of a red notice against Benazir Ahmed through Interpol following the application of the ACC. Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court Judge Md. Zakir Hossain issued the order.
According to the ACC’s allegations, Benazir Ahmed and her family members have amassed a huge amount of wealth beyond their known income and concealed information about their assets. On December 15, 2024, four separate cases were filed against Benazir Ahmed, his wife and two daughters.
The cases allege that the family acquired a total of 741.339 crore taka of illegal assets and concealed information about the assets. The ACC took legal action after the investigation raised questions about the source and legitimacy of these assets.
Benazir Ahmed was a prominent law enforcement officer in Bangladesh. She served as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Bangladesh from April 15, 2020 to September 30, 2022. Prior to that, she also served as the Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
Discussions have now begun regarding Benazir Ahmed’s arrest, her extradition, judicial process, and further proceedings in the case. It is learnt that preparations are underway by the concerned authorities to take formal steps in this regard.
