Four sentenced to death, nine

  • A court in Cox’s Bazar has sentenced four accused to death and nine to life imprisonment in the solitary murder case of army officer Lieutenant Tanzim Sarwar. Five people have also been acquitted.

    Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Abul Mansur Siddique pronounced the verdict on Wednesday (May 20th) afternoon.

    Twelve of the eight accused were present in the court when the verdict was announced.

    According to the investigation, seventeen people were initially registered, but they were dropped as they were not involved in the investigation. Seven other people were later found to be involved in the incident. Eighteen people were charged under the Prevention of Robbery, Murder and Arms Act.

    A joint operation was launched by the joint forces in connection with a robbery at the house of fish trader Rezaul Karim in East Maizpara of Dulahazara union in Chakaria on September 24 last year. Lieutenant Tanzim Sarwar led the operation. He was seriously injured in the robbery. Later, he was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.

    Three robbers were arrested from the spot. A local gun and six rounds of bullets were recovered.

    The deceased was identified as Lieutenant Tanzim Sarwar. He was commissioned into the Army Service Corps (ASC) through the 82nd long-term course from Bangladesh Military Academy in 2022.
